What an awesome evening I had last night. I spent the evening with great friends having a picnic at Durbanville Hills wine estate and listening to Adamsappel, a 9 man a capella group. WOW! It was brilliant. Cape Town being Cape Town, the wind got up and did try and blow things out, but it was still an awesome evening.
So what’s a capella, well taken directly from the Adamsappel website (incidentally http://www.adamsappel.co.za/) it means:
“The phrase “A capella” literally means “in the style of the chapel” which, in turn, refers to singing without instruments. So why opt for this style? Well, simply because it effectively highlights the unique union of nine extraordinary voices and diverse personalities by removing any potential distraction from the collective output. A capella is a style that simultaneously makes the performer vulnerable and victorious because it sets you free. adamsappel treads lightly over that fine line in order to maintain the delicate balance between those two poles. Our voices are our instruments. They are played by the words that leave our lips, mimicked by our movement, and conducted by our audience. The result is a co-constructed and meaningfully crafted experience that stretches beyond the realm of the audible. “
Not only was their musical talent very apparent but their sheer love and enjoyment for what they were doing. They fooled around with one another on stage, all the while not detracting from the music, but you could just see how much they were enjoying themselves.
So, if you ever get a chance to see them or hear them, DO IT! It is definitely worth while.
